Crane Load Testing

Total Equipment Training provides load testing services for all load bearing equipment in accordance with ASME B30.20 (below the hook lifting devices), B30.10 (hooks), B30.16 (overhead hoists) and ANSI N14.6. For the safety and productivity of your employees, and in order to stay compliant with OSHA guidelines, it’s critical to have your lifting equipment regularly tested.

Crane Load Testing Requirements

A load test is required for all new equipment whenever any alteration or modification has been made, and when the crane has been out of service. All equipment must be re-inspected after load testing has been performed.
Examples of equipment that should be load tested:

  • Overhead cranes
  • Below the hook lifting devices
  • Hoists

Rated Load Testing

Before initial use, load test and inspect all new, altered, modified, or repaired lifting devices. Rated load tests shall be done under the direction of a qualified person. A written report furnished by such person confirms the load rating of the lifter.

The rated load test includes the following operations as a minimum:

  • Hoist the test load a sufficient distance to ensure that the load is supported by the lifter, or apply the required load if the test is made using a testing machine.
  • After the test load is released, visually inspect the lifter for deformation, cracks, or other defects.
  • If a lifter fails a load test, it shall be repaired and retested before initial use.
  • Prepare a test report that identifies the device by serial number, drawing number, or other unique identifier and includes: name and title of person directing the test, date of test, and the test load.
