About Our Forklift Operator Training And Certification

Forklift training helps to save employee lives by reducing instances of a forklift overturning or other forklift-related accidents. Overturned forklifts are the cause of the most frequent forklift injuries because workers are either struck or crushed under the lift. If personnel are well qualified in forklift operation and safety and have earned the OSHA certification, most forklift accidents can be avoided. Protect your employees from unnecessary forklift accidents with forklift training and certification from Total Equipment Training.

Our forklift training consists of several modes of teaching:

  • We use lectures based on OSHA/ASME regulations, interactive, site-specific, practical training.
  • We use practical training on your equipment by conducting demonstrations and exercises that are site-specific.

Before you let an employee operate a forklift, as their employer, you must be sure that the employee is competent to operate a forklift safely.

The Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) estimates forklifts cause roughly 85 fatal accidents per year. All told, over 11% of all forklifts in the United States will be involved in some kind of accident each year. However, OSHA estimates that nearly 77% of all reported forklift accidents could have been avoided with proper training.

OSHA now has the authority to fine you $7,000 for every untrained forklift operator, and this can increase to $70,000 if the violation was proven to be “willful”.

Forklift operators are regulated under OSHA 1910.178, Powered Industrial Truck. OSHA requires forklift refresher training every three years. In this standard, OSHA requires all employers to develop and implement forklift operator certification for their employees before operating a forklift, no matter how small the project may be, proper training is needed when operating a forklift. OSHA requires that forklift training programs include the following:

  • General safety requirements using the OSHA standards for all types of vehicles used in the workplace
  • Focus on the employee’s knowledge and skill in operating a forklift or other vehicle safely
  • Fundamental principles of proper forklift operation
  • Potential hazards of utilizing a forklift in the workplace
  • General OSHA safety standards for powered industrial trucks/forklifts

OSHA Forklift Operators Refresher Training Requirements

OSHA requires Forklift refresher training every three years.

In addition, Your Employees Must Complete Refresher Training if the Following Situations Occur:

  • The forklift operator was involved in either an accident or a near-miss incident.
  • Someone reported the employee operating the forklift in an unsafe manner.
  • During an evaluation, it was determined that the employee needed training.

HOW TO BECOME A CERTIFIED FORKLIFT OPERATOR

Proper training is the key to preventing accidents and injuries. OSHA requires all operators to receive forklift training that consists of a combination of formal classroom training (e.g., interactive computer training or written material), and practical training, including a hands-on evaluation by a qualified instructor. In addition, refresher forklift qualification training is required at least once every three years.

Total Equipment Training’s Forklift Operator Training Program meets OSHA requirements and complies with the U.S. Department of Labor.

According to OSHA Standard 29 CRF 1910.178(I)(4), refresher training is required to be conducted when forklift operators are found to be operating unsafely, involved in an accident or near-miss, and when there are changes in equipment or work environment. OSHA requires an evaluation at least once every three years of each forklift operator’s performance.

WHY IS FORKLIFT OPERATOR CERTIFICATION TRAINING SO IMPORTANT?

Many construction and factory injuries are related to forklifts. About 100 forklift operators lose their lives every year and another 20,000 are severely injured. The major reason for these injuries includes: a forklift overturning, a pedestrian being hit by a forklift, a victim crushed by a forklift, and a victim pinned by forklift. These are all readily avoidable with the proper training.

To reduce these tragic incidents, OSHA requires forklift operators to undergo operator certification training. Forklift operator certification training provides evidence to prospective employers and OSHA that you have been qualified to follow OSHA requirements.
