HOW TO BECOME A CRANE OPERATOR IN PHILADELPHIA, PA

The State of Pennsylvania requires Certification from a certifying organization, currently NCCCO (National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators). Upon successfully, obtaining certification from NCCCO mobile crane operators may apply for licensure from the State of Pennsylvania. Proof of certification includes written and practical examination scores from the certifying organization, a physician’s certification that you are physically capable of operating a crane, a criminal history records check, and an application fee of $100 through the State of Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania mobile crane operator licenses are renewed biannually.

Trainees in Philadelphia, PA training to operate a crane for the purposes of acquiring the experience necessary to obtain licensing in Philadelphia may only operate or engage in crane operations if:

  • They are under the immediate supervision of a Pennsylvania licensed crane operator.
  • Has satisfied applicable ASME and OSHA standards for trainee qualification requirements for the type of crane being trained on.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older and must be physically capable of operating the crane.
  • Must register with the Pennsylvania Board of Crane Operators and attach evidence of a passing score of a written test with a certifying organization (NCCCO).
  • Must have written authorization from the Pennsylvania Board of Crane Operators granting permission to operate the crane. Authorization is only good for one year from the date of passing the written exam.
