Signal Person Training

UNDERSTANDING CRANE SIGNALS FOR OVERHEAD, MOBILE CRANES

The Department of Labor estimates that there are as many as 82 fatalities annually associated with cranes. Experts say that most crane accidents are due to wind or operator error. The use of a crane signal person can significantly reduce the likelihood of an accident associated with crane use.

WHAT IS A CRANE SIGNAL PERSON?

Crane signal persons act as the crane operator’s eyes and ears on the ground, especially when the point of operation is out of full view for the operator. The communications and signaling of a crane signal person are crucial in assisting crane operators and prevent accidents. For this reason

Effective November 2010, OSHA requires a signal person be present whenever the point of operation is not in full view of the operator when the operator’s view is obstructed in the direction the equipment is traveling or because of site specific safety concerns. (OSHA 1926.1419)

OSHA CRANE SIGNALS QUALIFICATIONS

OSHA requires that all Signal Persons be qualified (OSHA 1926.1419-1926.1422; 1926.1428). A signal person is qualified if he or she knows and understands the type of signals being used at the worksite, is competent in using these signals, and understands the operations and limitations of the equipment, including crane dynamics. OSHA further requires that the crane signal person pass an oral or written test and a practical test. Employers must make documentation of the signal person’s qualifications available at the worksite. The documentation must specify each type of signaling for which the signal person is qualified under the requirements of the standard (example: hand signal, radio signals, etc.).

OSHA Crane Signal Certification with Total Equipment Training

Our OSHA Signal Person Qualification Program is offered by our qualified evaluators (1926.1401). Our trainers will qualify your signal person(s) through classroom and hands on training. This program is geared to be site specific and the evaluation will be based on signal person requirements at your site. While our program will touch on all the requirements of the ruling the emphasis will be on your individual sites’ signal person needs. This assessment may not be relied on by other employers as the focus will be on site specific duties.

CCO Crane Signal Person Certification with Total Equipment Training

Total Equipment Training also offers the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (CCO) Signal Person training and testing. Our trainers are CCO certified examiners and have the experience and knowledge to prepare the crane signal person to successfully pass a written and practical test. Certification from the CCO provides the signal person with documentation that can be relied on no matter where they work. The CCO is accredited by OSHA for Signal Person Certification. Many companies and job sites require Signal Person Certification through a nationally accredited testing organization.
